HDX4 FAQ
![]() | What is HDX4? |
HDX4 was originally a MPEG-4 compatible video codec that made it possible to store high-quality video in files that are significantly smaller than those used on DVDs.
Meanwhile HDX4 is a complete suite of audio and video codecs. We offer now also MPEG1, MPEG2, Flash Video, h.264 and many more formats.
HDX4 dramatically advances audio and video compression, enables the interoperable distribution of content and provides a scalable and unified framework for a wide variety of different devices, e.g. mobile phones, handhelds, PDAs, TV set-top boxes, DVD players, PCs and many more.
The technlogy HDX4 is based on is MPEG, an international standard which is rapidly becoming the format of choice for future multimedia solutions. All implementations in HDX4 follow the guidelines of ISO/IEC specifications and thus is compatible to the most popular third-party MPEG4 implementations which use the MPEG4 Simple Profile and/or Advanved Simple Profile, like Xvid, DivX or Nero Digital.
![]() | Why should I use HDX4? |
Well, we think there is a very good reason to use HDX4: We think it is the best and fastest available codec at the moment. Of course this is a personal assessment but we definitely think you should give HDX4 a try... ;-)
![]() | Which video files are compatible with HDX4? |
HDX4 was developed to play back a multitude of today's codecs. We support decoding of all main MPEG4 (Simple Profile and Advanced Simple Profile) compatible video files. This includes 3ivx, DivX 3.11 untill the latest version, Xvid, Nero Digital, MPEG1/2 and also h.263, Flash Video & h.264.
HDX4 supports also various container formats (e.g. AVI, MP4 or 3GP) and of course several audio formats (like MP3, Ogg, AAC or AMR). No need to find the right codec for a special video file, just play it with HDX4!
HDX4 is a "one for all" solution. And even faster than other decoders, so even slower systems are now capable of playing MPEG4 files without dropouts.
![]() | Is there HDX4 compatible hardware? |
Because of the high flexibility of HDX4 there are already many hardware devices on the market that support playback of HDX4 content.
In June 2006, the ATS HS 677 was the first certified HDX4 player on the market!

This list does not claim to be complete. Errors excepted.
![]() | What are container formats? |
Well, in short: If you take a video file, it usually has a file name extension (the last part of the file name, after the last dot). Here are some very popular ones: AVI, MP4, 3GP, ASF etc.
![]() | Which audio formats are supported from HDX4? |
Movies usually consist of a video and an audio stream. HDX4 is responsible for the video part, and several audio formats are possible, e.g.: MPEG1 Layer 2, MPEG1 Layer 3 (MP3), Ogg, AMR, AC3, AAC, G.726.
